Are Golf Cart Keys Universal?

Like any other set of keys, it’s not uncommon to misplace your golf cart keys. Besides forgetting where you left them, the keys might fall out of your pockets during outdoor adventures. And while you could be lucky enough to retrace your steps and find them, if you don’t, replacing them is only the option. So that begs the question, are golf cart keys universal?

Are Golf Cart Keys Universal?

Golf cart keys don’t match unless they’re from the same manufacturer. Assuming you drive a Yamaha, you cannot power up your golf cart using Club Car keys. So, are golf cart keys universal according to the manufacturer? Let’s take a look at the compatibility of some golf cart key models.

E-Z-GO

TXT models from 1976 onwards use the 17063G1 key. But if you drive an RXV or gas wagon manufactured after 2008, you’ll need the 606993 key.

Yamaha

Yamaha keys fall into two categories. The first one is the serial number J17-82511-yy which powers up G1, G2, G8, G9, and G11 vehicles. Note that “yy” represents the key’s year of manufacture. On the other hand, the 1012505, 1920, ELI80-0194 key is compatible with both electric and gas models of the G14, G16, G19, G22, and G29.

Club Car

This vehicle is known for its versatility. Unless your golf cart was manufactured before 1982, any Club Car key will start your vehicle.

Remember, these rules might not apply to modified golf carts. Assuming you upgraded your engine, the recommended key style may not work for your vehicle model.

Where Can You Find a Replacement?

Your dealer or manufacturer can send you a replacement or advise you on where to get one. Alternatively, you can buy from online retailers with your key’s serial number. Your local locksmith can also help, especially if they specialize in small vehicles. If they don’t already have the key, the locksmith can make a replacement that matches your lock mechanism.

Remember to get a spare key to avoid such inconveniences in the future. This goes together with designating a storage spot to reduce the chances of misplacing your keys.

What if You Don’t Find a Replacement?

If all the aforementioned recommendations don’t work, you can change the ignition switch as a last resort. However, this may take some time if you’re in a hurry. Another option is hotwiring or using a screwdriver. Even so, you need to be sure of what you’re doing to avoid accidents or vehicle damage.
