Things to Know Before You Bring Your Golf Car to the Beach

The sun tanning your skin, the crashing of the waves, the caws of seagulls above, ahhh…it’s almost paradise—except, you just remembered that you have to haul your kids, cooler, and beach chairs back to your place on your own. But, if you drove a golf car to the beach, you could carry all of your supplies and your family all in one swift go. Golf cars can’t drive on sand, can they? Contrary to popular belief, golf cars can drive through the sand, as long as they have the proper setup to do so. Keep reading to find out how you can get your golf car ready for the beach.

You Might Need New Tires

A golf car doesn’t necessarily need to have special tires to drive through areas of sand. In fact, if you want to drive your golf car through sand, you normally can as long as you lower your tire pressure in your current tires before doing so. Lowering your tire pressure increases your vehicle’s traction, making it easier for your golf car to glide over sand. The major problem with this technique, though, is that lowering your tire pressure will result in flat, deflated tires once you get back on normal roads.

This method can also result in a blowout, costing you more money. An alternative to lowering your tire pressure is just biting the bullet and getting a set of tires that are suited for driving on sand. We recommend getting a set of all-terrain tires.

We Recommend a Gas Golf Car

Your golf car needs a strong motor if you want it to plow easily through sand, because sand does not allow your golf car to take advantage of the momentum. Most people who drive through sand will find that they need at least a 48-volt golf car. The golf car experts at Diamond Golf Car recommend getting a gas golf car. These are typically the ideal vehicle if you plan on driving your golf car on said, especially through sand dunes.

With all of this being said, you can get away with an underpowered golf car if you’re planning on driving on flatter sand, such as sand you’d find near the shoreline.

Issues You Might Face When Driving on Sand

Driving through sand on a regular basis can clog the air and fuel filters in your golf car’s engine. If you find yourself driving through sand pretty frequently, we recommend checking your filters every now and then to avoid sand buildup. A clogged air filter can have a dramatic affect on your golf car’s overall performance.

Keep in mind that saltwater is also incredibly destructive, and can cause your golf car to rust and corrode quicker than normal. To avoid this, it’s a good idea to hose down your golf car after each beach outing.
